Quiet observers make good architects. Our greatest asset — above sculptural form, a steadfast philosophy, or even longevity — is our ability to listen. Our art is to build in response to those observations.
Founded in 2006, when Emily Little Architects and Clayton Levy Architects joined, ClaytonLevyLittle has emerged as an architecture firm uniquely connected to the thriving and energetic sprit of Austin.
Walking a deliberate and elegant line between the historic and the contemporary, ClaytonLevyLittle’s studio embodies the firm’s philosophy. Housed in a carefully restored Victorian building and Austin landmark, the firm resides comfortably next to one of ClaytonLevyLittle’s own creations, the dramatic Pushard residence.
This juxtaposition is a metaphor reiterated on many levels: The character of old Austin evolving to embrace new generations and
viewpoints without losing its authenticity; historic buildings reborn and happily coexisting with modern, forward-looking structures; and for ClaytonLevyLittle itself, the accomplished career of Emily Little merging with the innovative talents of Paul Clayton and Stephen V. Levy.
The old meets the new in a marriage made more beautiful and resilient for its contrasts. The result is responsive, adaptive, authentic architecture.

“People call and say, ‘I hear you’re a good listener.’”
Emily infuses her designs with the lives and circumstances that surround each project, intertwining them with design and function. A cultural anthropologist at heart, she has built her career on making good design accessible and attainable, often by finding the small gestures that pay large dividends in improving the quality of a space.
Twice named Austin’s Best Architect by the Austin Chronicle, Emily is an expert in historic preservation, whose work has indelibly colored the fabric of her native Austin. In addition to consistently mindful new construction, her portfolio includes residential additions, historic renovations, and commercial adaptive re-use — projects that demonstrate her ability to coax dynamic new spaces from worn and tired ones, reframing their honest humanity within the existing context.
“The reward is in the client experience.”
For Stephen, it has always been the industry of architecture that captures his imagination. He thrives on the challenges that come with bringing ambitious architecture into existence. A native of Rockport Texas, he is a natural-born networker who connects clients with their projects, humanizing what can be a highly structured process.
Applying his experience in commercial and international work, Stephen laid the foundation for the firm’s move into larger scale development and helped ClaytonLevyLittle develop its sister construction company to ensure each structure is built with the same care as with which it was designed. His diligence in attending to budgets and schedules has earned the firm recognition from the Austin Business Journal, which named ClaytonLevyLittle a Top 25 Architecture Firm for three years running.
“It’s that ‘ah-ha’ moment of creation, when you take a leap of faith and start drawing something, and it all comes together.”
Born in West Texas and the son of a mechanic, Paul has a quiet manner, keen business sense, and pragmatic approach that build on his natural talent for architecture and devotion to sculptural form. Educated in both architecture and business, Paul is equally comfortable designing classic and contemporary, residential and commercial, as well as directing the firm’s construction company.
Paul responds to each project according to its needs, with a keen eye for realizing well-detailed spaces that are inspirational, authentic, and always cognizant of the people and places involved. His ability to build symbiosis between client, staff, contractor, and design allows ClaytonLevyLittle to expand the scope of its work while reinforcing the firm’s legacy of thoughtful, responsive architecture.
